Southern Michigan Bed and Breakfasts Favorite Guests of 2010

Jack & Choyce Quigley, owners of Quigley's Log Home B&B - Hudson Michigan, welcomed into their log house style B&B an international guest who has become their most interesting guests "EVER" - the Vice President and his wife from Zambia, Africa. The couple was traveling internationally to visit the rural area of Hudson Michigan to meet the family of their new daughter-in-law. Jack & Choyce had the privilege of being their hosts.

The innkeepers stated how interesting it was to talk with them and learn about their culture and their goals to make their homeland of Zambia a better place to live. Jack and Choyce now have a place to go and visit when they get the opportunity!

Dick Lewin and Mary Slater innkeepers at Albion Heritage B&B in Albion Michigan, said some of the most interesting guests whom have stayed at their bed and breakfast during 2010 have been guest speakers invited by Albion College. These include three film-makers, all of whom have made films that raise consciousness about social issues, such as the cultural and economic impact of illegal immigrants in a community, the history of Navajo rug weaving, and the experience of people from India living in the US.

They have also had  international guests from all over the world, including Nepal, Africa, and France to name a few.  Each has had interesting stories about their cultures, such as the university professor from Nepal who spoke about the caste system which is still prevalent in his country today.

The Munro House, a Jonesville Michigan bed and breakfast, has a favorite resident guest who has chosen to make the Munro House his home away from home. Don travels to Hillsdale on business on a weekly basis and prefers to come "home" after a long day at work. The corporate rates along with the amenities, conversation, cable TV, free wi-fi, breakfast, and family-like atmosphere makes this B&B the preferred lodging choice for this business traveler. Don has chosen the Munro House for the past 3 years, and has stayed over 100 nights in 2010. Don gives up the loyalty points that big chain hotels offer to stay in a comfortable convenient location, as he values his time.  Round trip to his regular hotel partner would cost him over an hour a day. It just isn't worth it when time is so precious and the Munro House is so close and comfortable.

T.J. and Allie were a father-daughter couple who were touring colleges across the Eastern portion of the United States--on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle!  They were visiting nearby Hillsdale College when they needed a break from the traditional hotel motel experience they had throughout most of their 2,500 mile road trip. Hosts, Mike & Lori Venturini, invited them to join in a cookout with friends that was happening that evening at the Munro House B&B in Jonesville, MI. It turned out that they were involved in their own family restaurant business and had a lot in common with the self-employed innkeepers. The confines of a motorcycle became good bonding time for this parent-child team. The hospitality of a bed and breakfast turned out to be a good fit and an excellent break during their cross country tour.

Michigan Spa and Christmas Wedding Reception

The Munro House, a Jonesville Michigan Bed and Breakfast, recently hosted a lovely Christmas themed wedding reception for 60 guests. The Venturini’s had their B&B all decked out for the holiday season and featured a 12 foot tall lighted Christmas tree.  The new bride felt that the festive decorations in their beautiful Southern Michigan Bed and Breakfast would complement her celebration perfectly.

Plenty of savory hors d'oeuvres were served for this mid-afternoon celebration, the player piano was set to lovely sounds of Christmas music, and the guests felt at home in this large, warm, comfortable setting.  A three hour afternoon time slot was the perfect timing to meet and greet all of the bridal party guests.

With the start of the busy Christmas shopping season, many folks can get stressed out by the annual “rat race” that is inevitable during this time.  This year, several guests who came to the Munro House B&B took advantage of their on-site spa during the weekdays preceding Christmas for a chance to slow down and relax.  They came to this small town of Jonesville MI, near Hillsdale and only 2 hours southwest of Detroit, for the perfect remedy for the Christmas time blues.  Most enjoyed an hour of massage, some added manicures and pedicures, while another ordered a warm algae body wrap.  Many of the guests just didn’t have time to spend driving to Lake Michigan or the Mackinac Bridge.  Instead, they chose to stay close to home and enjoy the slower pace of Jonesville and the wonderful hospitality of the Munro House.

Every year that Mike & Lori Venturini have owned the Munro House, a repeat guest named Susan and her extended family have come to Jonesville to host a Christmas party at the local museum that bears Susan’s family name.

The Grosvenor House Museum holds a Christmas open house every year during the first 2 weekends in December and Susan's family are the guests of honor. They welcome locals and visitors to enjoy live entertainment, snacks, and a beautiful mansion decorated in the traditional style. The Munro House is located directly across the street from the museum and is the prime lodging choice for this family from Arizona and can be your ideal place to call home while you visit Jonesville.

Albion Michigan B&B Helps, Kalamazoo River Oil Spill July 2010

Albion Heritage Bed and Breakfast, an Albion Michigan B&B did what they could during the  Kalamazoo River oil spill at Marshall Michigan back in July 2010 where over 800,000 gallons of oil spilled is going down as one of, if not the worst environmental disaster in the Midwest's history.

A state of emergency was declared in Michigan’s southwest Kalamazoo County as the oil spill made its way down the Kalamazoo River.  The Michigan oil spill was discovered on Monday July 26 at 9:30AM after the pipeline, Canadian owned Enbridge Energy, sprung a leak in Marshall Township, MI.  After the leak was discovered the pipeline was shut down when its isolation valves were closed off, according to officials at Enbridge Inc.

Just 12 miles west of where the pipeline ruptured, Albion Heritage Bed and Breakfast was one of the bed and breakfast that was there to offer lodging to the many employees of the Enbridge Energy, the EPA, investigators and the many wonderful people who volunteered to help with the oil spill cleanup efforts.

“All of these people were in need of places to stay, some had traveled many miles,” the innkeepers said.  Though the busiest time is the Fall for Albion Heritage B&B, this year their business was up by almost one third with many weeks in August at full capacity of the B&B.

Of all the guests they talked with, one in particular from the EPA said this disaster should have been reported as a story about success since there was no loss of human life, the Michigan oil spill was quickly contained to just 30 miles and the cleanup efforts of the Kalamazoo River may just make the river significantly much more free of pollution, something that had not occurred in decades.

The immediate result to the lodging industry within 30 miles of the oil spill was a boom in their business, with most facilities seeing a huge profit with increased rates during that time from supply and demand, the Albion House B&B actually reduced their rates and welcomed many guests who were planning on staying long term because of the convenient location of the inn in relation to the area of the spill.

Bed & Breakfasts are a great alternative to the “cookie cutter” hotel chains when it comes to convenience and comfort.  As you make your travel plans to Southern Michigan region, consider one of our many fine Southern Michigan Bed and Breakfast for your lodging needs.
