Hunting Season Alternatives in Michigan

The best part of fall in Michigan is getting to hunt! Whether you are an amateur or a professional, male or female, young or old, there is a wide range of species for anyone to choose, such as black bear, crow, deer, grouse, and wild turkey, simply to name a few. Among these, a large number of hunters are getting super excited for deer hunting and have been looking forward to it all year. The deer hunting season for regular firearms in Michigan is from November 15th through the 30th.

From the database, the number of deer expected to be harvested in Michigan during the 2011 deer hunting season is anticipated to be similar to last years’s estimated harvest of 715,000 deer. An expected 875,000 individuals will purchase at least one deer license in 2011. “Hunters will spend more than 10 million days enjoying deer hunting recreation during the archery, firearm, and muzzleloading seasons combined. This is more days spent deer hunting than in any other state or Canadian province.” said Doug Reeves, the Wildlife Division chief.

In addition to the astonishing numbers above, southern Michigan has been considered one of the greatest regions for deer hunting as well. You will not only be amazed by its comparatively high density of state forest lands, wildlife zones, and recreation areas, but also by its unlimited, beautiful natural scenes here. What’s even better, Bed and Breakfasts in Southern Michigan are a perfect way to begin your hunting day by having a hot breakfast made just for you or to have a "to go" breakfast waiting for you in the morning, and to end your harvesting day by spending relaxing nights with us. We look forward to having a chance to enrich the hunting adventures for you and your loved ones!

For those of you that don't hunt, escape to a Southern Michigan B&B with your mate instead of being in the woods with your mates. A warm relaxing getaway during hunting season does not have to involve spending hours in the woods. Find an intimate getaway in a room with a fireplace or a 2 person Jacuzzi tub in the Southern Michigan Bed and Breakfast Association website.

Michigan Fall Colors

The leaves are starting to change color throughout Michigan. When the winds are calm, the temperatures are mild, and the sky is sunny, it is a perfect day to get out to enjoy a Southern Michigan Fall color tour. Plan ahead for peak color weekends in October, or take a short notice trip on any weekday when the weather is nice.

The farmers are harvesting their fields. The contrast of earth tones, harvest golds, forest greens, and the myriad of Fall foliage compliment each other for a pleasant day wandering the back roads from the Irish Hills near Brooklyn to the shores of Lake Michigan.

Bed and Breakfasts in Southern Michigan are a great way to end a leisure day trip or a full weekend enjoying the final days before winter. Innkeepers can point you towards great restaurants, shopping, spa services, and night-time entertainment in many small towns. They can help design a perfect fall getaway for you and your lover.

Meeting at Legend Inn near Lansing

The Southern Michigan B&B Association meets regularly at another member's inn. A recent gathering brought several innkeepers to the Legend Inn B&B in Dimondale, MI. The Legend Inn is located in the country just a few miles south of Lansing on a centennial farm. The farm has been in the same family for generations. It is a huge family home that features a giant wrap-around screened-in porch, several out-buildings, and beautiful gardens.

Our group felt very comfortable meeting in this family farm house. A luncheon put on by the host innkeeper was a typical hearty farmers meal that satisfied the biggest appetites. Ample meeting space in this quiet setting made for a very pleasant, comfortable, and homey event.

A tour of the grounds brought us all in touch with farm life of a bygone era. An especially interesting tour included the milking barn. It was a large facility in its day, but is dwarfed by the huge mega farms of today. It is a must-see portion of a visit to the area. Groomed trails through the property make it a wonderful place to get away from city life for a few days in the country.

Tulip Time in Holland MI

It's Tulip Time in Holland Michigan. Over a million people will visit this small city on the shores of Lake Michigan to enjoy a festival that makes Holland one of the most beautiful places in the world. The event runs May 7-14 and includes trolley rides through town in neighborhoods that display hundreds of thousands of tulips in an incredible variety of sizes, styles, and colors. Locals are predicting the peek bloom day to be on Wednesday May 11. So if you have the time off, Wednesday should be the most beautiful tulip day.

Several parades are featured throughout the week, including the Governor's Parade. To ready the streets for our state's highest official, locals come downtown in full Dutch outfits--including wooden shoes--to scrub the street with mops and brooms. Adults and children participate in this quirky event that is a highlight for onlookers.

Lodging is at a premium in Holland and many places are sold out a year in advance. Neighboring cities offer bed and breakfast accommodations that are convenient for tourists in upscale and historic properties. J. Paules Fenn Inn in Fennville is about 30 minutes away and the Delano Mansion Inn in Allegan is about 10 minutes further. Tulip time has been recognized as one of the top 20 events in the world by the International Festival and Events Association. If you've never experienced Tulip Time, now is the time.

Riverfest in Jonesville

May is when Michiganders start enjoying the St. Joseph River. The "St. Joe" has a good flow and a variety of challenges to make it a fun day for a canoe trip in Southern Michigan.  The watershed rises in Hillsdale County near Baw Beese Lake and runs from South to North through Hillsdale, Jonesville, and Litchfield. It is sometimes confused with the other St. Joseph River of the eastward-flowing Maumee Watershed that rises just five miles away and flows to the East.

May 20-22 is the weekend for Riverfest in Jonesville. The weekend kicks off on Friday night with a 2 man triathlon. The race begins with a runner, who tags off to a biker, who rejoins the runner in a 2 person canoe to finish the race. This event is followed by a full weekend of competition including more canoe races and a 3 on 3 basketball tournament--all of which are open to the public.  Canoes are available for hire. Just sign up to compete in the class of your choice.

Other things to do at Jonesville Riverfest include a Classic Car Show (also featuring motorcycles), Museum Tours, Sidewalk Sale, along with Arts & Crafts. There are street vendors, a pancake breakfast, a sidewalk sale, the Fire Department BBQ, plus demonstrations by cloggers and local artists. On Saturday night there will be live music in the alley under the pavillion at Saucy Dog's featuring local band, STD (Silver Tongued Devils).

Sunday hosts the Fireman's Waterball competition and the Domestic Harmony Duck Derby with cash and prizes for the lucky winners. The Munro House B&B is located a block from the downtown festivities and 2 blocks from the canoe race finish line. Special rates are in effect for people who spend the weekend in Jonesville.

Michigan Wine Trails near B&Bs

There are 2 major wine trails in Southern Michigan.  The Pioneer Wine Trail in Southeast Michigan and the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail in Southwest Michigan. 10 wineries/tasting rooms in the East and 12 in the West provide an opportunity to enjoy some of Michigan's finest local wines. Numerous B&Bs in Southern Michigan complement both regions and are a perfect tie-in for the clientele that enjoy both industries.

In the early 19th century, pioneers settled the areas of Southeastern Michigan. Today, Michigan’s newest pioneers are growing grapes and making wine in these areas. The Pioneer Wine Trail region is a great place to spend a few hours, or a few days. The Trail starts in Blissfield and winds its way through the beautiful Irish Hills, north to near Lansing and includes 10 wineries/tasting rooms. Stop at the wineries, meet the vintners, taste their wines, and perhaps stay overnight at Dewey Lake Manor. This Brooklyn Michigan Bed  and Breakfast is midway between Pentamere Winery in Tecumseh and Cherry Creek Winery, just west of Brooklyn. The Munro House is a B&B in Jonesville that is within a half hour of the Cherry Creek Old Schoolhouse Winery in Somerset and Sleeping Bear Winery in Parma. Munro House has featured Sleeping Bear wines at their regularly scheduled Murder Mystery Dinners.

Lake Michigan Shore Wine Country has been called the Napa Valley of the Midwest.  This land is ideal for handcrafting fine wines just like the hills of Califtornia.  Charming resort towns and incredible shoreline are the ideal combination for touring and tasting in Southwestern Michigan.  Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail runs throughout the Southwestern lake shore region of Michigan. It starts near the Indiana border and continues North to Saugatuck. A dozen member wineries plus several additional tasting rooms are conveniently located throughout the region. Fenn Valley Winery has its new event list out for the month of March which includes Wine & Food Paring Weeekends.  Taste several unreleased wines paired with food samples at no charge.  Order any that you like and save 25-30%. Note that reservations are required for these special events.

J Paules Fenn Inn is located at the North end of the trail. It is a charming bed and breakfast near Suagatuck that regularly features desserts and wine tasting.  J Paules Fenn Inn is just a few minutes from Fenn Valley Vineyards and Wine Cellar in Fennville.

Beekeepers, Innkeepers, and Honey

The hardworking bees & beekeepers of summer have done their work and as the weather turns cold, the cycle continues in Michigan. Now, it's time to think about ways to use all that Michigan honey!

The G&N Honey Farm is located in Concord, Michigan, and produces hundreds of pounds of honey each season. Guests of the Palmer House, an Albion Michigan Bed and Breakfast located just a few minutes from Concord, will get an opportunity to not only learn about keeping bees, but can also try a delicious dish made with delightful sweet treats during breakfast.  Nellie is a beekeeper and hostess at the inn.  People who have tried her G&N Honey say that the taste difference between raw honey and generic pasteurized grocery store honey is immediately obvious.

The local honey is full of different floral flavors, beautiful on the tongue, and a pleasure to eat plain or mix with any favorite recipe.  Honey, nature’s original sweetener, is being rediscovered as a natural source of energy that also offers a unique combination of nutritional benefits. In addition to being a concentrated energy source, Honey contains a wide array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids. For a quick source of energy and to reap the benefits of Honey’s healthful properties, make honey part of your daily diet along with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Use Honey to sweeten your oatmeal or drizzle it over a grapefruit half. Add honey and fresh fruit to low-fat yogurt for an energy-sustaining snack or stir a spoonful of honey into a glass of water before your daily workout.  Our Michigan Honey can be used in place of sugar for cooking, toppings in tea, coffee, pancakes, waffles, biscuits, ice cream and much more.

Spring Getaways in Southern Michigan

Spring Break in Michigan? Why not! College students may prefer to go to Florida or Mexico for an action-packed week, but most other adults would rather avoid the crowds for their Spring Getaway. Bed and Breakfasts in Southern Michigan are a great way to get away without having to buy a plane ticket.

From the West Coast of Lake Michigan to the Irish Hills near Detroit, bed and breakfasts are a great choice for adults seeking a little March Madness without all the madness. A few days of rest and relaxation are sure to be on the agenda when any inn in Southern Michigan is chosen. The majority of Michigan residents can find an inn within an hour of their home.

B&Bs are very affordable when all expenses are added up. B&Bs eliminate those pesky add-on charges so familiar in hotel chains. Hotels make up for their low prices with all those extra fees that you don't always find out about until you get there. That great rate becomes a series of nickle and dime charges that takes the budget out of your vacation.  Many inns offer benefits with no additional fees for things like parking, internet, and breakfast. Cookies, snacks, soft drinks, and video collections are also available at no extra charge at most inns. Additionally, innkeepers have great knowledge of their area that they are willing to share. Need a great meal with great service? Ask an innkeeper. Want a great hamburger? The innkeeper knows where to get one. Want to just stay in your room and have a pizza delivered? Your host will tell you who does it best and with the most speed.

Colleges in Holland, Albion, and Hillsdale have annual spring parents weekend celebrations. These small cities have limited lodging choices and rely on the bed and breakfast industry to provide an extra place to stay for the families of their students.

The Munro House in Jonesville has a plethora of bed and breakfast getaway packages. Some are as simple as dinner and a movie while others can also include flowers chocolates and massages in their full service on-site spa. Detroit, Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Fort Wayne, and Toledo are all within 100 miles of the Munro House.

The nicest thing about choosing a B&B for your Spring getaway is that they can customize a package just for you on any day of the week.

Travel rewards for business travel at Southern Michigan Inns

Travel rewards for business travel to a Southern Michigan Inn come in many forms.  Some offer the serenity of a quiet and peaceful setting, some have in-room guests amenities for the weary traveler who hasn't been home in days and some offer discounted rates that can be up to half off the inns standard nightly rate.  Here are a few examples of what these Southern Michigan Inns have to offer their special corporate guests.

The Munro House, a Jonesville Inn, has captured many corporate travelers in Jonesville who are visiting local businesses, offices, and manufacturing facilities in Jonesville, Hillsdale, and Litchfield. The Munro House is the closest and most deluxe of local lodging facilities in Hillsdale County. Their weekday corporate rates are up to half off of their weekend standard rates and include breakfast, snacks, soft drinks, and free high speed wireless Internet. Their convenient location offers 10 restaurants within a mile ranging from fast food to fine dining. Some guests have been coming for annual business trips for years, some have only recently discovered this better way to stay, and some long term guests have negotiated special long term rates.

Quigley's Log Home B & B, a Hudson Michigan Bed and Breakfast, offers their 'Better Way to Stay' for corporate business travelers.  This 'Home Away from Home' offers your own private area with stone fireplace, satellite TV, amenities and conference room.  Follow this link to the Quigley Log Home B&B for more information about this inn.

The Dewey Lake Manor offers Brooklyn Michigan lodging and has many business travelers who already prefer their Bed and Breakfast in Brooklyn over other lodging choices. Innkeepers Joe & Barb Phillips have a business man who stays there and brings his bicycle to ride the scenic back roads after going for a swim in the lake. In the winter he cross country skis and then comes in and warms up with cookies and tea or cocoa. He has stayed there every week on business for years and has made the Dewey Lake Manor his home away from home.  One can stop and ponder this question, 'Could he do this at a hotel?'

Business travelers could drive 30 miles to get to the hotel that offers points for staying there. The back and forth travel time could add over an hour to an already long day. The corporate guest who chooses a local bed and breakfast gets their bonus points up front as many inns offer additional amenities for which many hotels and motels charge extra.  Most inns offer free wireless Internet, free parking, free snacks, free beverages, free breakfast, and of course, someone to talk to and share your experience with. Most inns also take credit cards and provide a secure location along with pleasant conversation which can be especially attractive for women traveling alone.

The colors of a wondrous winter sunset are a beautiful view from the rural property of Quigley's Log Home Bed and Breakfast in Hudson.  It is like a slowly revolving colorscape... a photographer's dream come true.  Later in the evening it is common to see up to a dozen deer as you go for a walk along their country road.  The moon and the stars will reflect off of the snow and light your way on a romantic winter walk.  A big cup of hot chocolate topped with lots of marshmallows and a relaxing time by the fireside can await you when you return to your hosts.

January and February are wonderful times to getaway to enjoy the beauty of living in Michigan.
